Our Group

Our group consists of four individuals: Ryan Howard, Max Levene, Georgina 'Didi' Finlay and Gabriella Kingsley. (The blog links are located on the right). We all developed the short story which we then called 'Smile', and then wrote a script. You can view all of our pre-production, production and post-production once they have been edited into our blogs.

Short Films That Go Into Consideration

Dealer - Part 2
For my AS media coursework, me and my fellow work partner Max created an opening title for our film 'Dealer'. As this piece of work received such good feedback, and got us A grades, we were thinking of doing a follow on, showing why the ace card was there. If we do this, at the beginning we will re-use some of last years footage with a title 'previously...' at the bottom.

One line - Gambling teenager knows people are out to kill him, seeing as he owes them money

Characters:
- Ryan
- Max
- Dami
- Didi
- Aimee Wright
- Craig/Jono as the man from behind

Beginning
-Starts with a chase scene of Ryan + Dami
- lasts for around 30 seconds
- high tempo music
- quick cuts
- Flashback which goes to Dealer - Part 1. Different bits of last years work which shows
- Ryan walking around, Max waiting, Ryan being given the box, and opening it to reveal the ace card.

Middle
- From the ace card being in the box, we have a dissolve which shows the ace of hearts.
-This card is lying on a desk, in a low-lit room, similar to an interrogation scene.
- We see a man from behind, with two girls either side. Max is sitting opposite this man, with a lot of shadow on the face.
- They are talking about how whoever receives the ace of spades, is the next to be killed
- Having this, people will then think that Dami is chasing Ryan so that he will kill him.
- Cuts back to quick cuts of the chase scene
- Ryan gets rugby tackled by Dami - cut straight to black so people think I have been attacked

End
- A flash back to a point of view shot of u driving your car, how u got a knife with u etc, and then u see me getting tackled right in front of the car, so you actually see that i’m being saved by him and not attacked.
- The audience know that Ryan has been saved
- NEED TO FIND AN ENDING WHICH IS GOOD

21 (remake)

One line - Gambling teenager gets caught counting cards

Story
A gambling teenager gets taught how to count cards, he then borrows money from a gangster, starts winning massively through counting, gets seen on cctv and a chase begins.

Vincent (remake)

One line - young boy thinks he is a famous singer/actor

- film, not animation
- narrative would be a modern day boy, who has a split personality, thinking he was someone else, completely out of the ordinary e.g. an 11 boy thinking he was Elton John, instead of someone more imaginable e.g. Elvis or Michael Jackson.
what could be good about doing this, would be if we make it a completely modern version, but only using the basic storyline; a boy who is clearly mucked up, and has got "two minds"

This short story was made using stop motion, by Tim Burton. He uses the similar style of this short film, throughout all of his future feature lengths, including; Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands and Sweeney Todd.
It is very gothic, and the use of Vincent Price's voice, (who is well known for having this deep voice, and also featured in the Michael Jackson song 'Thriller', helps create a spooky atmosphere. The story is of a young boy, Vincent, who pretends to be like the actor Vincent Price. He is obsessed with the tales of Edgar Allan Poe, who like Burton, was familiar with the gothic genre, but with poetry. The film ends with Vincent being tortured by the goings-on of his make-believe world, quoting "The Raven" (a poem by Edgar Allen Poe) as he falls to the floor in frailty, believing himself to be dead.

Scary/Suspense Film

One line - girl who is home alone, keeps seeing/thinking different things and people are around her

Story
A girl is home alone, making dinner, and she hears different sounds. She goes to the bathroom and sees writing on the wall (wipes her eyes and its gone), she then goes back down stairs and sees a knife in the lettuce. She looks into a mirror, sees a reflection with a man in a mask next to her, she turns around quickly and nothing is actually there.

Bo-Peep/Alice in Wonderland (remake)

One line - girl gets looser her friends and gets lost in a busy place, meets people a long the way who help solve different problems to help her get back

Story
- modern day version of Bo-peep, how she loses her sheep.
- the main character loses her friends in a modern place such as Oxford St
- is lost and is in a struggles to find them
- more twists and turns occur - similar to how Alice meets different people

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

Story
- modern day version
- story similar to Vincent, how there is a narrator narrating a poem, but this time we could use a song lyric mixed in with the nursery rhyme.
- the story would be how a young boy/teenager, is aspiring to become a famous person (skateboarder/musician) but keeps failing, but he keeps going because he feels he can become that 'star'.
OR
extremely similar to Vincent, with a little boy thinking he is a ‘star’

- modern day remake would be Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. The story would be very similar to Vincent, how there is a narrator narrating a poem, but this time we could use a song lyric mixed in with the nursery ryhme. The story would be how a young boy/teenager, is aspiring to become a famous person (skateboarder/musician) but keeps failing, but he keeps going because he feels he can become that 'star'.
One line - young boy keeps trying to make it big, to become a star

Favourite Directors

Favourite directors:

Charlie Chaplin - Modern Times, City Lights, The Gold Rush, The Circus
Tim Burton - Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas, Sweeney Todd
John Lasseter - Chief Animator at Pixar Studios - Toy Story
Orson Welles - Citizen Kane
Christopher Nolan - Batman: The Dark Knight
Charlie Chaplin
- Charlie Chaplin is one of my favourite film directors because at the time he was making his films, the technologies that we use now had not been invented then. This meant that he had to work with what he had available. Up until his film 'Modern Times' (1936), which is also my favourite Chaplin film, all of his were silent. Modern Times was also the first time the audience heard his voice in a film. This is because the character from the film, The Little Tramp, he had never been in a film where there was speech because it had not been invented yet, and because of this Chaplin did not want to ruin the character by making him speak. At the end of Modern Times is when we first here the tramp's character's voice, singing a song as a waiter.
Another reason why I admire Charlie Chaplin, is because not only did he direct his films, he also starred in them and wrote them, showing off his comedy skills. On top of writing, directing and acting, he also composed the music for most of his films. It was Modern Times when the instrumental of 'Smile' was first heard.

Tim Burton
- What I like about Tim Burton, is that all of his films are not normal. By 'not being normal', I mean they are nothing like reality. Tim Burton is my favourite director for many reasons. Firstly, I have grew up watching Nightmare Before Christmas, and Edward Scissorhands. Another reason is that Burton uses both real film, and also animation, which he started of doing at Disney. Another thing which I greatly admirer of Tim Burton is his use of collaborations, having continuously worked with actor Johnny Depp and music composer Danny Elfman. Films which Tim Burton has directed include Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride and Alice in Wonderland. He has also produced The Nightmare Before Christmas, which he also wrote. That film was directed by Henry Selick

(From Picture -2. While Danny Elfman is well known for composing music for most of Tim Burton's movies, he is credited in the above table for those movies in which he starred/sang in.)

John Lasseter
- an American animator, director and the chief creative officer at Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios. He is also currently the Principal Creative Advisor for Walt Disney Imagineering.
Having been an animator at Disney Studios, he was soon to become the Chief Creative Officer at Pixar Studios. Since becoming one of the biggest names in the animation world, he has created great films such as Toy Story, Cars and A Bug's Life

Christopher Nolan
- is a British-American film director, writer and producer. The films he has directed or produced which I like include Batman: The Dark Knight and Inception. What I like about his directing is that he manages to direct futuristic/non-real life films in such a good way, that it makes the viewers and audiences more involved with the characters, such as the Joker in Batman.

Short Films

Here are four very different short films. The three are each from Future Shorts.

Fallen Art

This short film was directed by Tomek Baginski who is from Poland. It was made in 2005.
The story of the short film is that in an old forgotten military base far from civilization, a group of deranged military officers nurture their insanity, by using creating a stop-motion animation of the soldiers dancing,
This one again is made using animation. Although the story wasn't the greatest, and it almost made me want to find a different film to talk about, this one ended up being my favourite. I like how it is completely different to any other short film, or even feature film I have seen. The use of music grabs the audiences attention, how it started of with no music, with a man jumping off a plank, to then almost 'chicken music' when the artist is dancing along with his finished work.

The Black Hole

The Black Hole was made in 2008, by British directors 'Phil and Olly'.
The story is of a sleep-deprived office worker, who accidentally discovers a black hole, in a piece of paper. He then uses it to steal from a candy machine, and then greed gets the better of him when he tries to steal money from the office's safe.
If I were to put The Black Hole into a genre, it would have to be comedy. This is because it is funny at the end when they only character attempts to take his greed further. What I like about this short film is the use of colour and sound. The colour is very grey and blue, which is trying to make office life seem incredibly dull. The use of sound adds to the story, and to the dullness of the office; there is no music, just continued office noises such as photocopiers and scanners.

This Is Me

This Is Me was directed by Sam Arthur, from the UK, in 2006. The story is of a man in a coma, whilst his wife enjoys the high life, spending the money her husband sued for. Throughout the 4 minute short film, you get to witness the rise and fall of this couple living under the Heathrow airport flight path. The main incident in the film is when Bernie, the main character, is sitting in his garden, when something hits him.
What I like about this short film, is that it is in the style of a documentary. The main character is usually seen talking to the camera, describing the previous incident. The use of colour also stands out a lot in this short. When he is lying in the hospital bed, the room is blue and grey, where as when he is having his flashback, he is sitting outside, with bright yellow colours, like he was enjoying life back then, 2 years ago.
